How to get and install a DS-5 eval/subscription or web/community (free) license for Windows

The ARM DS-5 eclipse based tools for Altera are now installed as part of the "SoC Embedded Design Suite"
https://www.altera.com/products/design-software/embedded-software-developers/soc-eds/overview.html

There may be some confusion regarding the names used on the main Altera website. ARM DS-5 "Altera Edition" (often referred to as DS-5 AE) and "Community Edition" in both cases simply refer to ARM DS-5 Tools for Altera with different capabilities/features enabled based on the activation code.
The "Altera Edition" is a subscription based version (there is a cost) and the "Community Edition" is a free version with both editions requiring and activation code from the ARM website. For a list of features for each edition/version see the following link:
https://www.altera.com/products/design-software/embedded-software-developers/soc-eds/ds-5-toolkit.html

After installing the EDS and DS-5 Altera Edition (if DS-5 was not installed during the installation of the "SoC Embedded Design Suite"), start Eclipse for DS-5.

This is located in the Windows 7 Start Menu under All Programs→ARM DS-5→ Eclipse for DS-5. Note: ARM DS-5 Altera Edition is now installed with the SoC EDS tools https://www.altera.com/products/design-software/embedded-software-developers/soc-eds/overview.html

Go here to look at licensing options http://ds.arm.com/altera/ (there are links and instructions here for all options)

The Eclipse tool will start, first asking for the workspace folder to be used. Use the default folder and press OK.

On the first tool launch the ARM DS-5 Altera Edition welcome screen will appear. Close it by clicking the Close button on the tab.

If the License manager prompt does not pop up automatically then from the Help Menu, select the ARM License Manager to set up your license.

When the manager opens you may see other FlexLM licenses that are already on your system.

Click Add License and follow A. B. or C..…

A. Evaluation license

Get an activation code for a 30 Day evaluation license from http://ds.arm.com/altera/altera-eval-edition/

(AC+70616421313531 – on 1 June 1013)Note: you can only do this once per NIC ID.

Enter the activation code into the serial number box and click on next.

If you get the 'Web services unavailable' error you need to enable https services (usually by enabling a proxy server) to be able to get evaluation license from ARM through the license manager

B. Web Edition license / ARM-DS5 Altera Community Edition (free)

For Web/community edition (free, Linux ethernet debug only) go to http://ds.arm.com/altera/altera-community-edition/ and get the activation code

(AC+70616421313438 – on 1 June 2013)

Enter the activation code into the serial number box and click on next.

If you get the 'Web services unavailable' error you need to enable https services (usually by enabling a proxy server) to be able to get the license from ARM through the license manager

C. Kit Serial number

(if you purchased the kit) enter your Serial number from your Kit customer letter. This may look something like this: 2RW64-72019-GE779

If you get the 'Web services unavailable' error you need to enable https services (usually by enabling a proxy server) to be able to get the license from ARM through the license manager

Next

Enter the code/number into the license manager and click next.

Select a NIC ID from the list displayed.

Make sure you select the correct DS-5 product at the bottom of the window before finishing
(DS-5 Altera edition (Evaluation) for eval license, DS-5 Altera Edition for full license/serial number from kit, etc.)
(Note: if you chose to download and install the full DS-5 edition evaluation from ARM (not the Altera edition) you should choose ARM DS-5 here)

Your license should now be installed and DS-5 Altera Edition ready to run!

(Note: you will need to install USB Blaster II drivers)

Issues?

If it is not possible to do this through the DS-5 license manager, go to the ARM web site https://silver.arm.com/ where you will have to register. Login if you already have an account.

If you have a serial number from the Altera development kit you can enter it along with a nic id and generate a license here https://silver.arm.com/licensing/generate.tm.
Once you have the license file you just need to point the license manager at the file location.

If you are looking for an eval/web edition license you can't enter the activation code here.
You have to send an e-mail to ARM support and they will send you a license file.
(Or for an eval you could download an eval version of the Full DS-5 toolsuite from the ARM website)
